Arona is better known for Los Cristianos and its beaches, but the hills behind the coast hold a quieter side of the municipality, and that's where its guachinches are. Expect local wines, plates of papas arrugadas with mojo and a round of grilled meat.

With vineyards around them and the sea in the distance, they feel homely and unhurried, and a few look out across the countryside.

They're a short drive from the resorts and a good way to get to know Canarian cuisine as locals eat it. Come hungry and you'll leave well fed.
