Santa Cruz and La Laguna have grown into one continuous city, but the countryside starts just beyond the suburbs, and that's where the guachinches are. Some of the best on the island are a short drive from the capital, serving home cooking with home-made wine.

Across Santa Cruz de Tenerife, La Laguna and the surrounding area, menus feature conejo en salmorejo, papas arrugadas with a spoonful of mojo, gofio escaldado and other local favourites. Prices are low enough that a big lunch barely dents the budget.

If you live in the city or are just staying there, a guachinche is the easiest way to escape for an afternoon.
