Pine forest surrounds Vilaflor, one of the highest villages in Spain, on the road up to Teide National Park. Its guachinches serve traditional home cooking with home-made wine from the area.

Up here the food is the hearty kind: a bowl of gofio escaldado, conejo en salmorejo, papas arrugadas and mojo, and a few local specialities. Prices are very reasonable.

Guachinches are a big part of Tenerife's food culture, and Vilaflor has some of the best. After a morning on the mountain, they're just the place for a plain, honest lunch.
