On Tenerife's west side, Guía de Isora runs from the coast at Playa San Juan up into the pine-covered hills. Its guachinches serve Canarian home cooking with wine the owners make themselves.

The menu is short and familiar: gofio escaldado, conejo en salmorejo, papas arrugadas dipped in mojo, plus a few local specialities. Bills stay low, and children and grandparents fit in just as easily as couples.

Guachinches run deep in Tenerife's food culture, and some of the best are out here in the west. Stop at one for lunch and see for yourself.
