El Hierro's capital, Valverde, is the only island capital in the Canaries that isn't on the coast. Its restaurants mix traditional Canarian cooking with international dishes.

Local ingredients lead the way, with carne de cabra, queso herreño and fresh fish on many menus.

Plenty of places also cater for vegetarians and vegans, and the town's bars and taverns are good for a drink and a few local dishes.

For island food in a relaxed setting, Valverde is a good place to start.
